Confirmation is an amazing time in the life of your student and in their faith journey. This experience is only offered once a year, for our upcoming 6th graders. Because of its importance, it does involve a commitment on the part of the confirmands to attend the classes, lock-in, retreat, service projects, and services. For the parents, there will be additional time spent with your student reviewing the materials and sharing with them your faith journey, as well. We know time is a hot commodity in our culture and community, but we encourage you to prioritize this time for your student’s faith development. Your students will be learning how to prioritize and what it means to keep their commitments, so we ask that you print and read through a parent and a student covenant with your student before the first parent meeting. Once you enroll, we ask that you print and read over the covenants and an event waiver (found on our Parent Orientation page) to bring to that meeting. Throughout the year, you will have to fill out an event waiver for each off-campus event we hold. The Parent Orientation is for Parents and Students to be introduced to the Confirmation Classes. Please be sure and bring them with you!
The confirmation process includes several components: classes, a lock-in, a retreat, a special service project and congregational recognition. Here are some of the details:
There are a total of 18 sessions covering the basic beliefs and history of the faith, the life of a follower of Jesus Christ, and the history and structure of the Methodist church. All of these classes will be held at 6pm on Sunday evenings. They will consist of some creative interactions, whole group teaching time and small group breakouts.
Congregational Service Project
The Confirmation Service Project is the Glow Run that occurs the first Sunday in December. Our Confirmation Families have found this event to be fun for the entire family and a great way to give back. You can choose to have your student run the event, or help serve those who are running.
The Confirmation Lock-in is held at Newnan FUMC. The lock-in will cover sessions that require in-depth study and discipleship.
The confirmation retreat is a one night excursion allowing the students to connect with each other and get away from their daily life to focus on God. We leave the church at 5:00 pm on Friday and return the following afternoon at 4:00 pm. Cost for the trip is expected to be $50 and includes accommodations, transportation, dinner on Friday night and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. We’ll be covering additional class sessions during the retreat as well as completing necessary components for Confirmation Sunday. It is not recommended that students miss the retreat so please plan ahead. This weekend covers MULTIPLE lessons as well as their exit interviews, stoles, and other things needed for confirmation Sunday. It is an extensive lesson to make-up and must be made-up with two counselors. We give you this date ahead of time to make sure EVERYONE can come.
Our confirmation service is held following the retreat during the 11:00 traditional service and will be preceded by a Vows of Confirmation dinner, on the Friday or Saturday before at 5:00 pm (depending upon the church calendar and availability). It will be a time for our confirmands, their families and friends to gather and celebrate their baptism, profession of faith and their accomplishments in the confirmation process in a special service dedicated to them.
Thank you for your time and for encouraging your student’s faith journey. Proverbs 22:6 tells us to “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Your example and training in your student’s faith and your commitment to the church does make a difference. Please know we are here to support and encourage you in any way we can as you raise your child in the love and knowledge of Christ.
